With a Quick Flick of a switch YOU'RE SUPER SAVER!
Gen 2 On The Road Test
Top speed: 118 mph 0-62 mph 12.6 seconds CO2 172 g/km Tax band E
PROTON's new Ecologic version of its Gen2 is a bit of a surprise. And not just because it's a dual fuel car that runs on either petrol or LPG, according to the flick of a switch in the cabin.
The lines of the GEN2 are smart enough and if you can ignore the dowdy and dated interior in what is, after all, a budget car it's good to drive too, thanks to input from Lotus.
It rides and handles smartly and is easy to drive for all those chores, such as the school run or shopping.
According to Proton you can save around [pounds]500 a year on your motoring bills by opting for the Ecologic, which includes a no- extra-cost factory conversion to liquefied petroleum gas, which costs around 52 pence a litre.
As a driver you probably won't notice that there's slightly less oomph from the 1.6-litre engine when running on LPG, although with a LPG tank you lose around three inches of boot space.
Other good news is that because of its LPG credentials this Proton drops down a VED tax band because, although there's less energy in a litre of LPG compared to petrol, it also produces less CO2.
If you want to clean up your act in the New Year, the Proton is worth considering but work out where your nearest LPG fuel station is first, by logging onto wwwproton.co.uk.
Around 15 per cent of all filling stations cater for LPG.
Gen 2's performance and the capabilities..
The Features and Performance Begin..This is a Gorgeous and Fantastic Sportcar!
The Proton GEN-2 is powered by a 1.6 litre, 16 valve CAMPRO engine which produces 110 bhp @ 6000 rpm. The manual car which we tested reached 0-60 mph in 12.6 seconds and will continue on to a top speed of 118 mph. The GEN-2 felt quicker than the quoted 0-60 mph time and coped well with all that we threw at it, including a long motorway trip during which it proved itself to be a competent cruising car. We did not like the weird jacking (revving) up of the engine when dipping the clutch to change gear, we are not really sure what was going on there - perhaps it was us. The engine and exhaust note are appealing although overall the top end performance is disappointing.
Proton quote a combined fuel consumption figure of 39.2 mpg - we saw nearer to the 35 mpg, but we did not measure this scientifically but on the range that we got from the 11 gallon fuel tank during the time we spent with the car.
Facts u need to know about Proton Gen-2
Here's my thoughts about Proton Gen-2. Check this out..
The Proton Gen-2 is an automobile manufactured by Malaysian carmaker Proton, and was launched in the third quarter of 2004. The Gen-2 uses a platform which is mostly Malaysian-developed. Loosely based on a mid-90s Mitsubishi chassis, the platform has been extensively developed by Proton and their partner Lotus. The Gen-2 was initially codenamed the Proton Wira Replacement Model, hinting that the car was to replace the Proton Wira. The name Gen-2 is an abbreviation of 'Generation 2', to symbolized the 2nd generation of the very successful Wira as the 1st Generation.
The Gen-2 was among the first cars to be produced in Proton's Tanjung Malim plant, located in Proton City.
The Gen-2's platform is also used by the Proton Satria Neo (with a shortened wheelbase) and the Proton Persona (with an extended rear hang to form a more sedan-like body).
